Oviatt was masterful on the evening, posting 36 points on 15 of 20 shooting, while adding 16 rebounds for the double-double. Â
The first quarter would open with a big three pointer from fourth-year guard Brett Warren which would ignite the home crowd. The 'Horns would struggle in the coming stretch, with the Cougars embarking on a 9-0 run thanks in large part to their hustle on the defensive end of the ball. Trailing 9-3, Scott Mazutinec would fuel a 5-0 'Horns run thanks to a three of his own to trim the Cougars lead to 9-8. Both teams would struggle to shoot the ball in the quarter, with the rims seemingly affected by the cold weather that plagued Alberta this week. The turning point for the 'Horns in this quarter were two offensive rebounds which led to buckets on both efforts - first, a Chad Oviatt and-one, followed by a Scott Mazutinec three. The Pronghorns would hold a 21-10 lead after ten minutes.
Â
The 'Horns started the second quarter with the blistering pace they finished the first quarter with - jumping out to an early 8-2 run. This run was capped off by an incredible alley-oop finish by rookie guard Avery Hutcheson, who made no mistake on a pass by Kyle Peterson. The Pronghorns would continue to add to their highlight reel in the quarter. Among the highlights, a Chad Oviatt euro step finish, and an emphatic slam dunk by Jeff Rodehutskors. Mount Royal also showcased their offensive prowess in the quarter, putting up 23 points after an abysmal 10 in the first. However, it was the Horns' dominance on the glass that made the difference. Lethbridge would outrebound the visitors by 10 in the quarter.
Â
It was the Chad Oviatt show in the third quarter, as Oviatt would explode for 14 points in the first five minutes of the quarter. An emphatic two hand slam off a steal would be the highlight of this stretch for the third year forward. With Oviatt heading to the bench, Scott Mazutinec would pick up where Oviatt left off, knocking down consecutive three pointers for the 'Horns. The Pronghorns built their lead to as many as 26 in the quarter, but would enter the final quarter up by 21, 82-61.
Â
The 'Horns would not let up in the fourth, keeping their foot firmly on the gas pedal to post 26 points in the quarter.
Â
The Pronghorns will look to recharge next week as they enter their bye week. They will return to action on January 31st against the MacEwan University Griffins in Edmonton. The Cougars will return home to Calgary next weekend as they welcome the University of Fraser Valley Cascades.
