Pronghorns kick off second half hosting Regina

LETHBRIDGE – Returning to Canada West action after the semester break, the Lethbridge Pronghorn men's basketball team opens 2020 at home, hosting the Regina Cougars for a pair of games at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.
 
The Pronghorns and Cougars will face off Friday night at 8:00 pm and Saturday night at 7:00 pm. Both games will also be streamed live on www.canadawest.tv, presented by Co-op.
 
A look at the teams:
 
The Pronghorns (3-7) enter the second half of the Canada West season sitting tied for the final playoff spot with three wins but lost their last three conference games before the break.
 
During the break, the Pronghorns competed south of the border in the Cactus Classis in Arizona and finished with a 1-2 record. The Pronghorns beat Ottawa University Arizona 95-83 in the final game of the trip.
 
Through the first half of the Canada West season, the Pronghorns sit eighth in team offense, scoring 85.5 points per game but sit 14th defensively, allowing 93.7 points against per game.
 
Still a team that gets to the free throw line this season, the Pronghorns are second in Canada West in free throw attempts (24.9) and free throws made (17.1) per game.
 
Five Pronghorns are averaging double digits in points per game this season but third-year forward Chad Oviatt leads the team with 14.8 points per game. Colton Gibb is averaging 12.9 points, while Kyle Peterson sits third with 11.3 points per game.
 
Peterson also sits second in Canada West in assists per game with 5.8 and has moved up to fourth on the Pronghorns all-time assist list with 273.
 
The Cougars (4-6) also enter the New Year on a losing streak and closed out the 2019 portion of the Canada West schedule with two straight losses, being swept at home by the Alberta Golden Bears.
 
Regina was also in action during the break competing in the Classique Olga Hryack tournament in Montreal. The Cougars lost to McGill and Quebec before beating Bishop's in their final game.
 
Sitting one spot ahead of the Pronghorns in team offense, the Cougars are averaging 85.6 points per game and sit 10th in team defense allowing 81.7 points against per game.
 
Carter Millar leads the Cougars attach with 17.7 points per game and sits fourth in conference rebounding averaging 11 rebounds per game.
 
Smauel Hillis and Greishe Clerjuste sit second and third respectively in Cougar scoring with 12.1 and 12 points per game.

The Pronghorns face the defending Canada West Champion Calgary Dinos next weekend in a home-and-home series. The Series opens Thursday night in Calgary, with the Pronghorns hosting the rematch on Saturday night.
