LETHBRIDGE – Having been eliminated from post-season contention last weekend with losses to the UBC Thunderbirds, the Lethbridge Pronghorns men's hockey team will put a wrap on the 2019-20 Canada West season this weekend, hosting the Calgary Dinos in a home-and-home series.
The Pronghorns and Dinos will face off Friday night in Calgary at the Father David Bauer Arena with the rematch Saturday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena. Puck drops both nights at 7:00 pm.
Saturday night is also senior night and the Pronghorn men's hockey program will honour graduating players Jack Burgart, Ryan Chynoweth, Russ Maxwell, Spenser Jensen, Dalton Sward, Evan Wardley and Torrin White.
Earlier this season, the Dinos swept the Pronghorns, 3-2 in overtime in Lethbridge and 5-2 in Calgary.
A look at the teams
The second half of the season has not been kind to the Pronghorns (5-18-3), since the calendar turned to 2020 the Pronghorns have gone 0-8-2 and were officially eliminated last weekend with two losses at home to the UBC Thunderbirds.
The Pronghorns have scored the fewest goals in Canada West with 61 and allowed a conference high 124 goals against.
A bright spot this season has been the play of a pair of freshman. Former Calgary Hitman Luke Coleman leads the Pronghorns in scoring with 12 goals and seven assists. His 12 goals is tied for tops amongst Canada West rookies. He is also sixth in Canada West rookie points.
Michael Clarke is tied for second in Pronghorn scoring with Landon Gross and Brooks Maxwell with 16 points.
For the Dinos (16-7-3) any hopes of a first round bye in the Canada West playoffs was dashed last weekend with an overtime and regulation loss to the Mount Royal Cougars. The Dinos and Cougars are battling it out for third place in the conference with MRU holding a one point advantage.
The Dinos sit in the middle of the pack in team statistics, ranked fourth in goals for (88), third in goals against (71), fifth in penalty killing (78.8%) and sixth in power play (18%)
Third-year Dino and former Lethbridge Hurricane Matt Alfaro leads Canada West in scoring this season with 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points. He has a three point lead on Alberta's Grayson Pawlenchuk for the scoring title with two games to play.
