LETHBRIDGE – Entering the final weekend of the conference schedule, the Lethbridge Pronghorns battled back from two goals down early in the second half to earn a 2-2 tie with the visiting Mount Royal Cougars in Canada West women's soccer action.
Lucy Mundy scored both goals for the Pronghorns, while Janai Martens scored twice for the Cougars.
With the tie, the Pronghorns move to 1-9-1 on the season, while the Cougars now sit 3-6-2.
Following a scoreless first half, the Cougars took control early in the second half, with two quick goals only to see the Pronghorns battle back with two goals of their own, also only minutes apart just 15 minutes shy of full time.
Mount Royal had the first quality chance in the 16
th minute. Alexi Watson laid the ball off to Sydney Danielewicz, who had a clear lane to the net however, Pronghorn keeper Erin Gill came off her line to make a sliding save.
In the 26
th minute it was the Pronghorns chance to have a good look offensively. First-year Brooke Barcelona collected a pass in the penalty area and was able to get a clear shot but Cougar keeper Lizzy Knight was able to dive to her right and make the save to keep the game scoreless.
Off a free kick from 31-yards out, Pronghorn midfielder Lucy Mundy just missed with her attempt sailing over the crossbar.
In stoppage time, Pronghorn keeper Erin Gill was in perfect position to swallow up a long range shot from Janai Martens.
Almost immediately after the restart the Cougars went on the attack. From outside the penalty area Monet Alonso-Cruz's shot glanced off the crossbar and out of play.
Remaining on the attack the Cougars were rewarded in the 52
nd minute. Isabella Chirico's cross deep in the penalty area found a streaking Janai Martens, who made no mistake to give Cougars the 1-0 lead.
Only minutes later, the Cougars were back at it and were rewarded with a penalty following a collision in the box. Martens put home the penalty in the bottom right corner for her second goal of the day and the season.
In the 77
th minute, the Pronghorns had a great chance off a set piece. Colette Mofkaham Cross into the box found the head of a Ellie Kabayama but the ball just slid wide.
Minutes later the Pronghorns push was rewarded with a penalty kick following a Cougar handball in the box. Midfielder Lucy Mundy promptly picked the top right corner for her team leading third goal of the season.
A hard tackle in the just outside the 30-yard line led to a Pronghorn free kick and Mundy brought the Pronghorns level at two in the 86
th minute.
Pronghorns pushed late to attempt to take the full three points but had to settle for a draw.
The Pronghorns and Cougars will close out the regular season tomorrow afternoon at the University Community Stadium, kick-off is slated for 12:00 PM. Catch all the action on
