LETHBRIDGE – Following a tough 28-point loss in their season opener, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns found themselves once again playing catch up to the University of Calgary Dinos in a 75-56 loss to wrap the weekend series.
Heading into halftime down fifteen, the Pronghorns would chip away at the Dinos lead in the third quarter to pull within nine points to start the fourth quarter. However, it was the Dinos' pace that proved to be too much.
The Dinos were led by a pristine effort from rookie guard Annacy Palmer, who scored 31 points on an efficient 12 of 17 shooting. The Pronghorns were once again led by Savannah McMahon, who scored 20 points on 5 of 10 shooting. Jessica Haenni and Haily Weaver would contribute 11 and 10 points, respectively.
With the win, the Dinos sweep the weekend series to start the season 2-0. With the loss, the Pronghorns drop to 0-2.
The first quarter saw both teams rely on shots from beyond the arc to establish their offensive game. Shooting a combined nine threes in the quarter, the Dinos capitalized on three of their five shots from long range, while the 'Horns sunk only one of their four attempts. The visitors would out rebound the home side 13 to 5, taking a 20-11 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter was characterized by sloppy play by the 'Horns, leading to 9 turnovers in the quarter. The Dinos would capitalize on the extra possessions, pushing the ball up the floor for easy points in transition. Calgary would take a 40-25 lead into halftime.
The Pronghorns would come out of halftime re-energized. Tightening up on the defensive side of the ball, the 'Horns would limit the Dinos to only ten points in the quarter. The Dinos would cool down from beyond the arc, connecting on only two of their eleven attempts in the quarter. Second year guard Savannah McMahon would score eight of Lethbridge's sixteen points in the quarter, putting the 'Horns within nine, 50-41, after three quarters.
The final quarter would slip away from the Pronghorns, as the full court pressure of the Dinos would prove to be too much for the inexperienced Lethbridge group.
The Pronghorns will travel up the QE2 next weekend from a series against the University of Alberta Pandas. The Dinos will enter a bye weekend, returning to action November 12
