EDMONTON - A cold start to the second half proved to be the Lethbridge Pronghorns undoing Friday night, in a weekend opening loss to the Alberta Pandas, 75-62.
Jessica Haenni led the charge for the 'Horns on Friday night, finishing with a game-high 20 points on 9/22 shooting, with 14 of her 20 points coming in the first half. Savannah McMahon added 12 on 5/11 shooting.
Brianna Fehr led the Pandas with a team-high 19 points in her Alberta debut, adding three assists and four rebounds.
Emma Kary added 12 points off the bench for Alberta, with
Neve Murray also adding 10.
The win gives Alberta a quick 1-0 start to their season, with Lethbridge falling to 0-3 to kickoff their 2021/22 season.Â
The two sides played a level first quarter, finishing the first 10 tied at 16's. The visitors, thanks to six points in the second from Haenni, and a poor shooting performance from the Pandas, outscored the hosts 19-9, taking a 35-25 lead into the half.
The Pandas exploded in the third, shooting 47% from the floor, scoring 26 points. Murray led the Pandas with eight in the third, with seven different Pandas finding the scoresheet.Â
The 'Horns mustered just seven points on 14% shooting, killing their chances for a road win.
Fehr added 10 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter, clinching the season-opening win for the Pandas.Â
The win snaps a two-game home losing streak for the Pandas against the Pronghorns. The two rivals will clash again tomorrow night at 5:00 p.m. at Saville Community Sports Centre and on Canada West TV presented by Co-Op.Â
