Pronghorns send seniors off with win over Dinos

10/8/2021 8:59:00 PM

LETHBRIDGE – Looking to avenge their only loss of the 2021 campaign, the ninth-ranked University of Lethbridge Pronghorns would defeat the University of Calgary Dinos 22-14 in their second and final meeting of the season.

Despite the Dinos scoring the first and last tries of the game, twenty-two Pronghorn points in between would lead the home side to a victory in in their final home game of the season.

The 'Horns would celebrate their fifth-year seniors following the game: AbbyDuguid, Abbyl Neudorf, Caitlin Sears, Charlie Mitchell, Erin McFadden, Gwen Fillinger, Karlee Durfee, and Sara Cline.

With the victory, the Pronghorns improve to 3-1 on the season with two games remaining on their schedule. The Dinos drop to 1-3, looking to finish the season strong with only the top four teams qualifying for the Canada West Championships.

The Dinos would find early success pushing into Pronghorn territory thanks to a relentless effort by their back row. This would lead to a scoring play thanks to an efficient Dino scrum that would see the ball pushed out to second-year wing Kate Knight. A Berlyn Seselja conversion would see the Dinos take a 7-0 lead in the 4th minute.

The Pronghorns would bounce back from their slow start off the backs of strong play by their locks. Pushing towards the try line, fourth-year backrow Gwen Fillinger would score the home team's first try of the game at the 19th minute. A Catilin Sears conversion would see the game tied 7-7.

At the 33rd minute, an Abby Neudorf penalty kick would give the Pronghorns their first lead of the game, 10-7.

Minutes before the halftime whistle, a Pronghorn line out would be received by fifth-year center Abby Duguid, who would power past the Dinos backline for a try. With the Neudorf convert, the Pronghorns would take a 17-7 lead into halftime.

Lethbridge would carry their momentum forward into the second half, with fourth-year Taber product Genna Wright scoring a try to push the Lethbridge lead to fifteen, 22-7.

A late Dinos try by third year centre Grace Campbell would make for an interesting final few minutes, with the 'Horns ultimately prevailing.

The Pronghorns will travel to the west coast to finish their season, with a Thursday tilt against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, followed by their regular season finale against the University of Victoria. The Dinos will return home to McMahon stadium to face the University of Alberta Pandas.
