Pronghorns have home opener spoiled by Griffins

LETHBRIDGE – With a pair of goals in each half, the MacEwan Griffins played spoiler of the Lethbridge Pronghorns home opener walking away with a 4-1 victory.
 
The win improves the Griffins to 2-1-0 on the season, while the Pronghorn drop to 0-3.
 
Samantha Gouveia, Raeghan McCarthy, Kaylin Hermanutz and Grace Schimpf scored for the Griffins, while Kaleigh Harris replied for Pronghorns.
 
Winning the opening coin toss, MacEwan took the wind in the opening half on a blustery day in Lethbridge and took advantage early.
 
On the fourth consecutive corner kick, Gouveia found the touch in the box to beat Pronghorn goalkeeper Erin Gill and before the game reached the 10 minute, Mark McCarthy doubled the Griffins lead. Off a set piece, McCarthy look a short touch from Anna McPhee and blasted a long range shot passed Gill.
 
The Pronghorns regained their composure in the later half of the opening frame, having a good look off a set piece for their own but Anneke DeKlerk's shot was swallowed up by Griffins keeper Breanna Truscott.
 
Off a scrambled play 36th minute, Kaleigh Harris was the beneficiary of a loose ball and potted her first of the season for the Pronghorn to cut the deficit in half.
 
With the wind at their back in the second half the Pronghorn had some early pressure at the start of the second but could not find the equalizer. Tory Clement came closest for the home side but her shot off a long throw in was turned aside by Truscott.
 
After weathering the early Pronghorn pressure, MacEwan regained the tow goal lead in the 61st minute. Kaylin Hermanutz grabbed a bouncing ball and slotted a shot to the low corner.
 
In stoppage time, MacEwan upped the total to four with Grace Schimpf being created with goal after the ball was spilled by Gill.
 
The Pronghorns will head to Calgary tomorrow to take on the Calgary Dinos, while MacEwan also heads to Calgary to face the Mount Royal Cougars.
