Mazutinec powers Pronghorns to sweep of MRU

LETHBRIDGE – In search of their second consecutive series sweep, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns outclassed the Mount Royal University Cougars from the opening tip for a convincing 96-62 victory.

It was an impressive night shooting the basketball for the 'Horns, as they shot an efficient 50% from the field, while only missing two of their 24 free throw attempts. This negated a strong performance from the Cougars on the offensive glass, as the visitors grabbed 17 to the Pronghorns' 8 offensive rebounds.

With the victory, the Pronghorns extend their winning streak to six games, improving to 6-4 on the season. The Cougars fall to 2-8.

The 'Horns were led by a 29-point performance from Amy Mazutinec on 7 of 12 shooting and a perfect 12 of 12 from the charity stripe. Savannah McMahon, Millay Johnson, and Jessica Haenni acted as supporting cast, recording 14, 13, and 12 points apiece.

The Cougars were led by Tanis Metcalfe with 20 points, while Jenika Martens chipped in 10 points and 9 rebounds.

The 'Horns began the game once again showcasing their depth, with six scorers contributing to the team's first seven baskets as they built a 14-4 lead. It was the same trouble with ball security however for the Cougars, who committed seven turnovers in the game's first five minutes. Mount Royal would tighten up their ball security in the final five minutes, avoiding a turnover for the remainder of the quarter. Despite this, the 'Horns would use their balanced offense to take a 24-14 lead into the second.

The Pronghorns would bring their strong first-quarter play into the second thanks to three consecutive baskets to take a 30-14 lead. The Cougars would begin to find a rhythm, only to be countered by three consecutive three-pointers from the 'Horns. With the score at 39-21, Lethbridge would continue to shoot the ball at an exceptional rate, finishing the quarter 55% from the field to take a 48-28 lead into the half.

The Cougars would return from halftime re-energized, embarking on an 11-4 run to start the quarter, led by second-year forward Jenika Martens. The 'Horns would counter with a 20-8 run, led by 10 points from Amy Mazutinec in that stretch. Lethbridge would take a 72-46 lead into the final quarter.

The home team would keep their foot on the gas, outscoring Mount Royal by eight points in the final quarter for the 34-point victory.

The Pronghorns will take next week off from Canada West action, before returning to the hardwood February 4th and 5th in Edmonton against the MacEwan University Griffins. The Cougars will travel up the QE2 next weekend for a series against the University of Alberta Pandas.
