EDMONTON – Coming off a bye week, the Lethbridge Pronghorns didn't miss a beat, extending their win streak to a conference best seven games with a 74-64 win over the MacEwan Griffins.
The win improves the Pronghorns record to 7-4 on the season and leapfrog the Calgary Dinos for second place in the Central Division after the Dinos lost to the Mount Royal Cougars. The loss drops the Girffins to 2-9 on the season.
Guard Jessica Haenni scored a team high 20 points on an efficient night of shooting, hitting on 6 of 11 from the field, which included four buckets from long range. Haily Weaver chipped in with a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Noelle Kilbreath paced the Griffins with a game high 22 points, while Mady Chamberlin and Mackenzie Farmer contributed with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Two deciding factors in the win was the Pronghorns ability to win the battle on the glass and forcing turnovers. The Pronghorns out rebounding the Griffins 47-38 and turned 19 offensive rebounds into 20 second chance points. The Pronghorns also scored 32 points off of MacEwan's 30 turnovers.
The Pronghorns jumped out to a 16-8 lead after the opening quarter, only to see the Griffins claw back in the second quarter and cut the Pronghorn cushion to only four points at the half, 34-30.
While the Pronghorns opened a quick eight point lead out of the break, MacEwan wouldn't go away quietly in the third quarter. Trading baskets through the middle of the quarter, the Griffins would close the third on a 11-5 run to take a 50-47 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Kick-started by a Amy Mazutinec three-pointer to open the fourth, the Pronghorns would race out on a 15-2 run to regain control of the game and a 10 point lead with just over five minutes to play. The Pronghorns continued to push the pace in the fourth, building a 15 point lead before settling for the 10 point victory.
The Pronghorns will look to keep the win streak going tomorrow night, closing out the weekend set with the Griffins in Edmonton. Tip-off is set for 5:00 pm, catch all the action on
