Box Score A little bit of sharing has put the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's basketball team back into the win column.
The Pronghorns downed the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 81-69 in Canada West play Friday night at the 1st Choice Savings Centre in Game 1 of a two-game set.
With the win the Pronghorns snap a five-game losing streak and improve to 2-5 as the teams get ready for the rematch Saturday night.
The WolfPack are 0-5 with the loss.
In Friday's opener, the Horns broke open a 67-67 tie on a quick seven-point run capped off by a Shae Gibb three-pointer.
But it was the double-digit distribution that had Horns head coach Jermaine Small nodding in approval with six members of the home side topping the 10-point mark.
"I just said to them that I don't think I've coached a game where we've had six guys in double figures," said Small. "That really speaks to our togetherness and we just have to keep building momentum. The guys are obviously sharing the ball, very unselfish."
Hitting double digits Friday night was Kymani Pollard topping the team with 17 points.
Jeff Rodehutskors added 12, while Angelo Mbituyimana, Deng Dak and Gibb came off the bench and added 12 each.
Avery Hutcheson chipped in with 10 for the Pronghorns, starting at forward.
Rodehutskors also posted the double-double with 11 rebounds and Mbituyimana had four assists and four steals.
"We only had 12 turnovers, I think that's season-low," said Small. "It's hard to nit-pick and complain, but that's the job of a coach, but I just think it's our start, losing 18-11, (but) we won every quarter since then. Plus, getting Deng and Karter (Fry) back really helped us as well."
After some cold shooting from beyond the arc in the first half, the threes started falling for the Horns in the second half, helping them pull away.
"When you shoot 1-for-13 in the first half from the three (point line) and then shoot 6-for-13 (in the second half), the three-ball is a momentum thing. It gives us energy," said Small. "I thought defensively we picked up a little bit better. We pressured them, they turned it over. We just won a lot of the loose balls and I think when you have that, and our bench energy was good, it's hard to lose those kinds of games, when you have that energy and effort. We need it from the start, obviously. But give them (WolfPack) credit, too. They play hard and have an identity and they move the ball very well. We haven't played a team with that style. So we have to give them credit, but I'm glad we overcame it and won the game."
With that comes the shot in the arm of getting back into the win column.
"It definitely gives us some confidence," said Small. "I said to them it's a good win, but don't be satisfied. There are things we can do much better. That start, we lost the first quarter 18-11. The starters have to pick it up, but once again, I thought our energy was good."
The Horns now look to make it two in a row Saturday when the rematch hits the floor at 7 p.m.
"They want a split," said Small of TRU. "They're going to come out with even more urgency. They were in the game (Friday), so we have to be ready for that, match that energy and surpass it. I like how we played, especially toward the end. We just have to carry it over from the third and fourth quarter (Friday).
Cyrus Harrison led the WolfPack with 20 points, while Denys Bachurin had the double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Asher Mayan and Daniel Bost added 12 points each.
The Pronghorns shot 47.1 per cent from the field, 26.9 per cent from the three-point line and 66.7 per cent on free throws.
