Pronghorns push Bears to brink but fall just short

LETHBRIDGE – In a reversal of roles from Friday night, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns would push the University of Alberta Golden Bears to the final possession, dropping a 91-84 decision to Canada West's top team.

Heading into the fourth quarter down by eight, 67-59, the game was seemingly out of reach for the 'Horns after being outscored 26-12 in the final quarter of Friday's contest. However, a switch went off for the 'Horns with 4:30 to play as Lethbridge would begin their comeback. Down 77-65, an impressive effort on the offensive glass would fuel an 11-0 run for the 'Horns, led by Moreau Darlington and De'Andrae Pierre.

Having trimmed the Bears' lead to one, an 8-2 run by Alberta would put the visitors up by eight. A 4-0 run by the 'Horns would give them a chance to tie the game with 50 seconds remaining. In fitting fashion for his return to Lethbridge, it was Colton Gibb that would ice the game for the visitors thanks to a three pointer that put the game out of reach.

The Pronghorns honored three graduating seniors prior to the game – Chad Oviatt, Zachary Coleman-Bock, and Colton Gibb, who played his first four years of eligibility at the University of Lethbridge. Their contributions to Pronghorns Athletics and the University of Lethbridge are greatly appreciated.

With the loss, the Pronghorns drop to 6-8 on the season, looking to stave off Mount Royal for third place in the Central division. With the victory, the Bears improve to 14-0 on the season, with their sights set on an undefeated campaign.

The Pronghorns were led by a 25 point, 10 rebound double-double from Chad Oviatt, while Moreau Darlington, De'Andrae Pierre and Jeff Rodehutskors added 14, 10, and 10 points apiece.

The Bears were led by Tyus Jefferson, Geoffrey James, and Colton Gibb who recorded 28, 23, and 14 points apiece.

It was a hot start for Chad Oviatt who scored 11 of the Pronghorns' first 13 points, as the home side would embark on a 13-2 run to start the game, forcing an Alberta time out. The Pronghorns' impressive start would be bookended by a fantastic four-point play from De'Andrae Pierre. The 'Horns would take a 24-14 lead into the second quarter.

Halfway through the second quarter, the 'Horns would hold a 36-28 lead, but a scoring drought paired with Alberta's explosive offense would see the visitors embark on a 20-2 run to lead 48-38 at the half.  The Bears would score 10 second chance points in the quarter, outrebounding the home side 11 to 7.

Both teams would battle in the third quarter, with Alberta converting three Lethbridge turnovers into seven points. The 'Horns would hang with the Bears offensively, while finding success defensively in slowing the Alberta offense from a 52% clip in the second quarter, to 45% in the third.

An inspired comeback would fall short in the fourth quarter as the Bears would keep their undefeated season alive.

The Pronghorns will travel to Edmonton next weekend to make up a postponed series against the MacEwan University Griffins, prior to returning home to host part of the Canada West playoffs. Alberta will make up a series against the University of Calgary Dinos, having secured the number one seed in the Central Division.
