Win streak hits eight for Pronghorns

LETHBRIDGE – Looking to continue to roll, the Lethbridge Pronghorns withstood an early fight by the hosts but took control late in the opening quarter and never looked back in a convincing 72-56 win over the MacEwan Griffins.

The win improves the Pronghorns record to 8-4 on the season and remain one game ahead of next week's opponent, the Calgary Dinos, for second place in the Central Division. MacEwan's record slides to 2-10 on the season.

Haily Weaver led the Pronghorns with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Savannah McMahon had 14 points, Jessica Haenni 11 and Amy Mazuntinec 10.

Mackenzie Farmer and Noelle Kilbreath co-led the Griffins with 11 points each and both fouled out of the contest late in the fourth quarter. Shannon Majeau was close to a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.

The Pronghorns started taking over the contest late in the first quarter, closing on a 7-0 run to hold a 20-13 lead at the first break. Stepping up their defensive effort in the second quarter, the Pronghorns held MacEwan to single digits and went into the half with a 34-22 lead.

Behind some strong defense and good ball movement on offence, the Griffins closed to within seven points late in the third quarter. But just when it appeared they might get back in the game, they started missing shots and faced another double-digit deficit after Mazuntinec's three-pointer.

Starting with a Jessica Zarowny jumper to open the fourth, the Pronghorns extended the lead to 21 points only three minutes in and cruised to the 16 point victory.

The Pronghorns will be on the road again next weekend and will travel to Calgary to face the Dinos in a battle for second place in the Central Division.
