Pronghorns pick up first win of the season

CALGARY – Coming off a tough first game of the weekend set in Calgary, the Lethbridge Pronghorns showed some resiliency, to pick up their first win of the season, 2-1 over the Calgary Dinos.

The win was the first Canada West win for new Head Coach Davin Haigh and improves the Pronghorns record to 1-4-0 on the season.  The Dinos fall to 1-2-2 after picking up their first win of the season a day earlier versus the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The win also marks the Pronghorns first win since September of 2017 when they beat the UNBC Timberwolves 1-0 in Lethbridge.

The loss marks the Dinos' first against the Pronghorns since 2017, bringing their season record to 1-2-2.

Scoring was opened by the Pronghorns' Alasdair Coyle in the seventh minute, assisted by Karim Bey.

Calgary was able to answer back in the 33rd minute thanks to an impressive effort by Kundai Dziwa. Dziwa managed to chip the ball up and over the head of the Lethbridge netminder to get the Dinos on the scoreboard and tie up the game at 1-1.

The Dinos defence was no match for the Pronghorns though, as Damon Field brought the score up to 2-1 for Lethbridge in the 39th minute of play, again with Bey registering the assist.

The Dinos continued to swarm the Pronghorns out-shooting them 9-1 in the second half, but neither team would add to the scoresheet. The Pronghorns were able to withstand the Dinos barrage even down a man for the final five minutes, plus injury time after Will Hughes was issued a red card in the 85th minute.

First-year goalkeeper Tegan Romaine made six saves to pick up his first career Canada West win as well.

The Pronghorns return home to next weekend to take on Trinity Western and UNBC, which includes the middle game of Saturday's Horns Triple Header versus the Spartans.
