LETHBRIDGE - The final event of the 2022 Horns Triple Header was women's rugby, where the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns faced off against the University of Alberta Pandas. The game showed strong efforts on both sides, but ultimately the Pronghorns came out victorious with a 17-13 win.
This win brings up their standing to 1-2, whereas the Alberta Pandas now stand at 1-1.
In addition to the win, the Pronghorns overcame a two point deficit from last weekend's 22-20 loss to claim the Suggitt Cup for the fourth time in five years.
Â
After some initial back and forth play the Pandas opened the, scoring with a penalty kick off the foot of Kate Manning to put the Pandas up 3-0. Not long after and off the first lineout of the game, the Pronghorns kept possession and pushed forward. At the 13 minute mark the Pronghorns scored the first try of the game, with Keegan Brantner coming over the line.
Through an aggressive effort from the Pronghorns they scored another try at the 18 minute mark, where the Teagan Viney picked and went from the base of the ruck to push near the touch line before Karlee Durfey finished off the sequence with a try. Verity Fex was successful on the convert, moving the score up to 12-3 for the Pronghorns.
In a though back and forth battle the Pandas advanced towards the line. Nevertheless, the Pronghorns managed to push back towards midfield. There was a penalty given to the Horns at the 35-minute mark, which the Pandas used to make a threatening move. Through this, Panda Maria Sawiak scored a try for her team, bringing the score to 12-8 right before halftime was announced. Â
Coming back from halftime Panda Bronwyn Dormaar scored a unconverted try to push the Pandas ahead 13-12. However, the Pronghorns quickly responded back. Deep in Pandas territory, the Pronghorns used a maul to move within sight of the touch line and senior Savanna Collison touched the ball down to put the Pronghorns back in front 17-13.
Looking to make another push of their own, the Pandas pushed deep into the Pronghorns zone but their attack was held off for the final minutes to secure the Pronghorns victory.
The Pronghorns take a couple days off before their next match, heading out on the road to face the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds, Thursday and Sunday respectively. The Pandas move on to face the University of Calgary Dinos on Saturday, September 24
