Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Timberwolves hand Pronghorns second consecutive loss

LETHBRIDGE – Falling behind early in the first half, the Lethbridge Pronghorn men's soccer team wasn't able to recover, dropping a 5-0 decision to the UNBC Timberwolves Sunday afternoon at the Community Sports Stadium in Lethbridge.

The loss drops the Pronghorns to 1-6-0 on the season, while the Timberwolves improve to 3-4-1.

Canada West goal scoring leader Michael Henman recorded a hattrick and now sits at 11 goals in seven games this season. Anthony Preston scored his first of the season and Connor Lewis rounded out the Timberwolves scoring.
Getting off on the right foot, the Timberwolves generated some early pressure and were nearly reward before the game hit the five-minute mark. Tora Omori's early look rang off the post.

Keeping up with the pressure, the visitors were rewarded in the ninth minute. Anthony Preston won a battle in the Pronghorn penalty area and fed a ball to the far post to Michael Henman, who made no mistake to put the Timberwolves up 1-0.

Finding their footing 18 minute in, the Pronghorns threatened to find the equalizer. On a quality sequence to move into attacking area, Karim Bey swung the ball into the box and Will Hughes header was deflected over the bar by UNBC keeper Daniel Zadravec.

Off a misplayed ball, Henman nearly picked up his second goal of the half. Moving past Pronghorn keeper Tagen Romaine, Henman had two cracks at it but Kyle Szymanski and Tom Dennes were able to block both of Henman's attempts at the empty net.

In the 40th minute, Henman did score his second of the first half and 10th of the season, heading home a rebound after Romaine made the initial save off of a point-blank shot from Loic Benquet.

As the game moved into first half stoppage time, Kai Sakaguchi, who scored a goal yesterday, had a look at cutting into the Timberwolves lead but hooked his shot wide.

Early in the second half, UNBC continued the offensive attack and increased the lead only three minutes after the restart. Off a forced turnover, Anthony Preston slotted home is his first goal of the season.

The Timberwolves continued with the offensive push and Henman nearly completed his hattrick but couldn't beat a Pronghorn defender, who blocked the shot on the goal line.

In the 76th minute, Henman just did that, scoring his third of the game to extend the lead to 4-0.

Connor Lewis rounded out the scoring with a penalty kick in injury time.

The Pronghorns will head out on the road next weekend, traveling west to face the Victoria Vikes and UBCO Heat. UNBC will return home to host the Saskatchewan Huskies and MacEwan Griffins next Friday and Sunday respectively.
