Pronghorn comeback falls just short

LETHBRIDGE – Coming off their first point of the season a day ago, the Lethbridge Pronghorns were not able to carry that momentum into Sunday afternoon, falling 3-2 to the visiting Thompson Rivers Wolfpack.

The Pronghorns fell behind 3-0 before rallying late to score twice to cut lead to only one but ran out of time to notch the equalizing goal.

The loss drops the Pronghorns to 0-4-1 on the season, while Thompson Rivers moves above 500 at 3-2-2.

In the first game of the weekend set yesterday, the Pronghorns battled the UBCO Heat to a 1-1 draw to earn the squads first point of the 2022 season.

Ainsley Grether, Camryn Curtis and Katie Chun each scored for the Wolfpack in the win. Hailey Slobodian and Alexa Evis replied for the Pronghorns.

After the cautious feeling out process, the Pronghorns had the first quality opportunity off a corner kick. Striker Hailey Slobodian swung the ball dangerously towards the net and TRU keeper Marissa Young was forced to deflect the ball off the crossbar.

In the 23rd minute the Wolfpack had their first quality chance with Ainsley Grether letting go a shot from just inside the box, however Bridie Harding was in perfect position to make the easy save.

A short time later the Wolfpack broke the deadlock. Emily Clark's initial shot was stopped by Harding, but Grether jumped on the rebound to pot her second goal of the season.

Slobodian looked to respond only minutes later with a shot from 15 yards but she was not able to beat a diving Young.

As the game moved into stoppage time of the first half, Camryn Curtis collected her own rebound and doubled the Thompson Rivers lead to 2-0.

Out of the half time break, Thompson Rivers continued with the offensive pressure, pushing the Pronghorns on their heels, and hemming the Pronghorn in on their side of the pitch. Harding made two quality saves in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to keep the Pronghorns within two.

The Pronghorns could only withstand the pressure for so long and Katie Chun upped the Wolfpack lead to 3-0 in the 77th minute.

The Pronghorns were finally able to hit the scoreboard in the 85th minute. Alexis Bradford feed a ball to on rushing Hailey Slobodian. Slobodian was able to elude a on charging Young to deposit a shot into the open net.

Just short of full time, the Pronghorns cut the lead to only one with Alexa Evis scoring her first career Canada West goal, however that would be as close as the Pronghorns would get.

The Pronghorns will be back on home field Tuesday night hosting the Fraser Valley Cascades to make up the postponed game from last weekend in Abbotsford last weekend. Thompson Rives will be back at home next weekend hosting the Trinity Western Spartans and Fraser Valley Cascades.
