LETHBRIDGE – Wrapping up a stretch of five games in eight days, the Lethbridge Pronghorns held a halftime lead but were not able to hold off the Alberta Pandas, dropping a 3-1 decision Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops the Pronghorns to 0-6-2, while Alberta moves above the .500 mark at 4-3-1.
Pronghorn Hailey Slobodian scored her team leading fourth goal of the season to open the scoring in the first half, while Adrienne Poulin scored twice for the Pandas and Wanda Czebreszuk picked up the other Panda marker.
With both teams looking to rebound from losses yesterday, Alberta opened the game with some early offensive pressure, but it was the Pronghorns who would strike first.
After going scoreless yesterday, the Pronghorns capitalized on their first offensive opportunity. Hailey Slobodian's long range shot eluded Pandas keeper Autumn Wynn in the 11
th minute.
Following the opening goal, the Pandas pressured the Pronghorns searching for the equalizer. Pronghorn keeper Bridie Harding did her part to keep the Pandas off the board with a pair of quality saves, including a great diving save off Erin Hope just before the 20-minute mark.
In the opening 45 minutes, statistics favored the Pandas everywhere except the most important one, the scoreboard. The Pandas had 21 shots attempts with nine on goal, while the Pronghorns only attempted three shots, all were on goal. Corner kicks were 5-1, also in favour of the Pandas.
The Pandas picked up where they left off in the second half, pressuring the Pronghorns and were rewarded in the 55
th minute. Emily Duxbury swung the ball into the box to an unmarked Adrienne Poulin, who chested home her fourth goal of the season to tie the game at one.
Five minutes later, the Pandas took their first lead of the game. Wanda Czebreszuk was sprung by Duxbury and slotted home her third goal of the season.
In the 77
th minute, Poulin added an insurance marker beating substitute Erin Gill, who replaced Harding only 10 minutes earlier. Harding finished the game with 15 saves before being relieved by Gill.
The Pronghorns will be on the road for the next two weekends, traveling to Saskatchewan next weekend to face the Regina Cougars and Saskatchewan Huskies. Alberta will also be on the road heading to Manitoba to face the Winnipeg Wesmen and Manitoba Bisons.
