Horns can't catch Pandas in leg one of the Suggitt Cup

POST GAME
The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns dropped the first leg of the Suggitt Cup, 38-21, against the University of Alberta Pandas at the University of Lethbridge Community Stadium. Kenya Richards scored the first try for the Horns, breaking the Pandas defence up the sideline, energizing the crowd on Senior Night for the 'Horns. Verity Fex earned the convert to make it 7-0 for the Horns, but the Pronghorns were not able to hold the Pandas back for long. Alberta would score four back-to-back tries to put the Pandas up 24-7 going into the second half. The Horns clawed their way back into the game, earning their second try in the 47th minute from Payton Viney, with Verity Fex successful in the convert. However, Alberta added to their lead in the second half, adding two more tries to put the Pandas in control. Eden Wilson scored for the Pronghorns in the final minutes, but even with the made convert by Kayleigh Noel the Horns would drop their first match of the season.
 
BREAKDOWN
  • Kenya Richards broke the Alberta defense in the second minute of the game, running up the sideline to score first for the Pronghorns. Verity Fex completed the convert to put the Horns up seven to start the game.
  • Alberta maintained control over much of the first half, keeping the ball in the Horns zone. The Horns were able to keep the Pandas off the scoreboard until the 18th minute, when Michi Gratton scored for the opposition, leading to a four try run.
  • Michi Gratton ran one in for the Pandas in the 33rd minute of the game, setting up Kate Manning for the convert from centre.
  • In the second half, Kayleigh Noel made a push for the Pronghorns working deep into the Panda's zone, which put Payton Viney in scoring position to earn the try for the Horns. Verity Fex followed up the try, completing the convert to bring the Pronghorns within ten.
  • Alberta earned their first try of the second half in the 55th minute, as fourth-year Panda, Ashley Amson worked inside to add to the opposition's lead. Kate Manning completed the convert to make it 31-14 Pandas.
  • Eden Wilson earned the try for the Horns in the final minutes of the game, with Kayleigh Noel successfully completing the convert. Time would run out as the 'Horns couldn't catch the Pandas.
