WSOC - Huskies Bite Horns

Lethbridge – The Saskatchewan Huskies, on the strength of two quick goals within two minutes each other, defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 3-0 in Canada West soccer action.

Elizabeth Hudon and Lindsay Manz scored two minutes apart in the first half, which provided all the offence the Huskies would need on this day to earn their fifth victory of the season.

The Huskies opened the scoring in the 14th minute after a ‘Horns offside trap failed.  Hudon walked in alone, her first attempt hit the post but she followed up the initial shot and deposited the rebound into the open net.

Just over a minute later, the Huskies would strike again as Manz beat ‘Horns keeper low to the left side.

After a lackluster start to the game, the ‘Horns elevated their play after the Huskies second goal and generate a couple quality opportunities of their own to cut into the Huskies lead. Jaclyn Groten had their best opportunity in the half but her shot from inside the Huskie penalty was deflected over the bar by Huskie keeper Marissa Wilford.

Jaclyn would spring her twin sister Janelle a short while later but a sliding challenge from Wilford would turn that opportunity away. Wilford would finish the day with 7 saves.

Leanne Mylymok scored the lone goal in the second half, beating Willoughby from the middle of the box, after a sequence of ricochets off players from a Huskie cross left her alone in the penalty area.

With the win the Huskies improve to 5-3-1 and leap frog the Calgary Dinos for fourth in the conference. The ‘Horns remain winless on the season and fall to 0-8-1.

The ‘Horns will host the Alberta Pandas tomorrow afternoon to conclude the weekend, while the Huskies will travel to Calgary to face the Dinos with huge playoff implications on the line.
