VICTORIA - The UVic Vikes continued their unbeaten streak today defeating the Lethbridge Pronghorns 5-1 at Centennial Stadium. All five goals came from give separate scorers showing the depth of this year's womens' squad. The Horns' goal, scored by Erika Anderson, came against the flow of the game.
Despite maintaining the majority of possession, the Vikes had a slow start to the opening half. Numerous opportunities generated from Jaclyn Sawicki (Coquitlam, B.C.), Lindsay Hoetzel (Victoria, B.C.) and Jaqueline Harrison (Whitehorse, YK) up front couldn't find the back of the net. Hoetzel was unlucky not to notch one after ringing one shot off the cross bar and two off the post.
In the 33rd minute, hard work down the right side by Hoetzel and Sawicki led to a soft pass through the 18-yard box that was finished on the ground by Cassie Dennis (Calgary, Alta.). The 1-0 lead came after UVic led in shots 11-2.
Ten minutes later, Sawicki and Hoetzel combined again to set up Shannon Elder (Victoria, B.C.). Elder's shot floated up and over Horns' keeper Taura Willoughby to lift the Vikes 2-0 before the half.
Building on their first half momentum, the Vikes immediately made their way down to the the Horns' end. Willoughby along with Horns defenders Kathy Curtis and Sherry Latrace did well to keep a series of Vikes shots out. Against the flow, the Horns had a rush down the left side and Shannon Clark was left alone against Vikes keeper Parker, who made a brilliant reactionary save. The save proved to be at a crucial time to keep the Vikes in the lead by two.
Minutes later, Vikes rookie Emma Greig (Tofino, B.C.) had a shot on goal that was saved. The rebound off Willoughby bounced up and Nathalie Scharf (Salmon Arm, B.C.) was there to volley the rebound in, giving the Vikes a 3-0 lead.
The Horns began to gain offensive momentum earning their first goal midway through the second half. Horns' senior midfielder Jaclyn Groten was key in setting up striker Erika Anderson, whose shot had just enough on it to bounce off Parker and roll across the line.
Following a period of Horns' momentum, Vikes' Greig received a ball down the left side from Scharf and worked her way to the end line. A left-footed cross to the opposite side of the field found Maryse Reichgeld (North Vancouver, B.C.) all alone. Reichgeld calmly one-timed the ball into the back of the net giving the Vikes the 4-1 lead.
In the 78th minute, Scharf sent a well-paced through ball to Aja Battie (North Vancouver, B.C.) who looked to cross the ball. In an attempt to block the cross, Horns' defender Sherry Latrace redirected the ball into her own goal, giving the Vikes a 5-1 lead.
The 'Horns will have a week off before they return to action October 15th and 16, hosing the Saskatchewan Huskies and Alberta Pandas.
