The
Men’s Soccer team (1-10-1 CW) will conclude the 2011 season this weekend hosting a pair of the top schools in the conference in the Trinity Western Spartans (6-4-2 CW) and UBC Thunderbirds (9-1-2 CW).
On their final road weekend, the ‘Horns earned a draw against the Fraser Valley Cascades and lost a tightly contested 1-0 match to the conference leading Victoria Vikes on Sunday.
Despite being eliminated from post-season contention, the ‘Horns will still have a chance to have an impact on how the playoff picture will look.
Saturday’s opponent, Trinity Western currently holds down the final post-season position but only by one point over the Calgary Dinos, who host the Spartans on Sunday. Anything but a win on Saturday by the Spartans could set up an interesting scenario for the final regular season game and determine who will advance to the Canada West final four.
The CIS third ranked UBC Thunderbirds, who the ‘Horns will host Sunday afternoon, are still in the hunt to host the Canada West final four but trail the Victoria Vikes by one point for the top spot in the conference and the right to host the conference championships. The T-Birds sport the conference’s top ranked offence by a wide margin, scoring eight goals more than any other team. With two games remaining, the T-Birds have scored 30 goals and are led by Sean Haley’s 6 markers.
First-year Pronghorn Shlomo Swan-Azman leads the ‘Horns, scoring two of the Horns seven goals on the season.
Sunday also marks senior day with the ‘Horns bidding farewell to three players who will play in their final game in a Pronghorn uniform. Co-Captains Colin Pattison and Justin Larivere, along with Raphael Paczkowski will complete their eligibility this weekend.
Kick-off for both Saturday and Sunday are scheduled to follow the women’s game at 2:00pm at University Community Stadium.
