Lethbridge - Off to the best start in the team’s history, the Pronghorn women’s hockey team (7-3 CW, 12-6-0 overall) heads out on the road to face the Regina Cougars (3-5-0 CW).
The ‘Horns are tied for first in Canada West with the Calgary Dinos and moved up one spot in the CIS rankings to 9th after a weekend split last week with the defending Canada West Champion Manitoba Bisons at home.
Sophomore goaltender Crystal Patterson has continued her stellar play in net for the ‘Horns. She has played in all 10 conference games and sports a sparkling 1.46 goals-against average and 0.946 save percentage. She has played the most minutes in the conference and leads Canada West in shutouts with three.
Shelby Ballendine and Jenna-Marie Durnin lead the team offensively with seven points apiece, while freshman Sadie Lenstra leads the team and all conference freshmen with five goals.
After failing to score in their first 24 attempts, the ‘Horns power play has finally shown some life, scoring four power-play goals in their last 18 attempts.
The Cougars, coming off a pair of losses to the Calgary Dinos, have had an up and down opening half to the conference schedule. Prior to suffering the sweep last weekend, the Cougars swept the UBC Thunderbirds. Both series’ were on the road and this weekend will be the Cougars first home games in nearly a month.
So far this season, the Cougars have struggled offensively scoring the second fewest goals in the conference with 15 and are led by Paige Wheeler with three goals.
