LETHBRIDGE – Looking towards a new season, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's hockey team is excited to announce the signing of Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats captain Maddy McCleary for the 2020-21 Canada West season.
The addition of McCleary increases the programs incoming recruiting class to six after earlier commitments from Abby Soyko, Alli Soyko, Maddy Noonan, Emma Neff and Mallory Dyer.
"Maddy will join the program from a strong, well-coached Midget AAA program in Swift Current and has four years of experience playing in the Saskatchewan AAA midget league," said Pronghorn head coach Doug Paisley. "She is the team captain and comes from a great family with a strong hockey pedigree."
"She plays and contributes in all situations for the Wildcats and possesses a high hockey IQ. She also has a very good work ethic and we think she will have an immediate positive impact on our back end next season."
In her fourth season with the Wildcats, McCleary has collected five goals and 15 assists in 26 games thus far this season, while helping the Wildcats to a 18-6-1-1- record and a second place position in the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League (SFMAAAHL). She has already set career highs in assists and points with four regular season games remaining in the season.
In a 110 career games she has accumulated 13 goals and 38 points from her blue line position.
The 5-foot-5 blueliner is the daughter of former NHL defenceman Trent McCleary and has been an honour roll student throughout high school. McCleary plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree during her time at the University of Lethbridge.
