The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (6-2-0 CW) women’s hockey team has had quite a few “firsts” in the past week. Friday night they defeated the University of Alberta Pandas for the first time, which led to their first sweep of the Pandas on Saturday night. Then on Tuesday, the Horns were the highest ranked Canada West team for the first time, coming in at 10th.
The first place Horns look to build on what has been a memorable campaign thus far as they take on the University of Manitoba Bisons (2-2-2 CW) in Lethbridge on Friday and Saturday Night.
Horns fourth-year defenseman Amy Van Buskirk was a stand out in the Horns unprecedented sweep of the University of Alberta Pandas over the weekend.
Friday night, Van Buskirk notched a goal and an assist to give the Pronghorns a 4-3 shootout victory. The Brandon, MB native also netted the shootout winner to end the decade-and-a-half losing streak.
Saturday night Van Buskirk was at it again, scoring the overtime winner to give the Horns a 2-1 victory. Van Buskirk is currently tied for second in the conference for points by a defenseman with 4 points (2 G, 2 A).
Horns goalie Crystal Patterson has been nothing short of stellar so far this season. Patterson, who hails from Calgary, AB, is currently the conference leader in wins (6), save percentage (0.949), and shoutouts (3).
Rookie Sadie Lenstra is having a great campaign as well. Lenstra is currently tied for first in rookie scoring with 4 points (3 G, 1A).
Manitoba enters the weekend series with the Horns currently sitting in 6
th place after splitting a weekend series with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The Bisons did manage to take 3 of 4 points, dropping a 3-2 overtime decision on Friday before beating the Huskies 4-3 on Saturday night.
The Bisons come in with an impact freshman as well in Jessica Carswell. Carswell shares the rookie goal scoring lead with Lenstra with 4 points (2G, 2A).
Forward Nellie Minshull leads the Bisons with 6 points so far this season but Carswell, Meagan Vestby and Addie Miles have shown the Bisons depth by contributing 4 points apiece.
In between the pipes, goalie Leiette Klassen has handled the bulk of the work by appearing in five games and sporting a 0.900 save percentage and a 2.50 GAA.
