Lethbridge – The Calgary Dinos rode an early first half goal to a 1-0 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns and in the process earned a weekend sweep of their southern Alberta rivals.
With the win, the Dinos improve to 3-1-0 on the season, while the ‘Horns remain winless at 0-4-0.
Before the game reached the five minute mark, the Dinos struck with the only goal they would need. After a cross was deflected by ‘Horns keeper Colin Pattison, Cristian Lorenzoni one-timed a volley perfectly into the bottom left corner.
The Horns held a good majority of the play with their counter attack, but were unable to capitalize on their chances. Colin Hasick was forced into making six saves on the afternoon to earn the clean sheet.
Morgan Brownjohn had two of the ‘Horns better chances in the opening half, but was not able to find the mark. He was on the end of a nice sequence of ball movement deep in the Dinos end but, narrowly missed the near post. Later, off a set piece just outside the penalty area, his strike sailed over the bar.
Much of the second half was played between the penalty areas, with neither team truly threatening. The blustery west wind made it difficult for either team to go over the top of the opposing defenders.
With just over ten minutes remaining, Matt Medoruma had an outstanding opportunity to draw the ‘Horns level but his side foot effort sailed over the bar.
At the other end, Pattison made an exceptional save diving to his right to thwart a Dinos free kick from just out side the penalty area, to keep the Horns within striking distance.
The ‘Horns are back at home next week, hosting the Victoria Vikes and Fraser Valley Cascades. The Dinos will host the same two schools, starting with Fraser Valley on Saturday.
