Weekend Recap - September 5-7

9/8/2025 12:22:00 PM

It was a weekend of grit, growth, and breakthrough moments for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns teams across rugby and soccer as they battled on the road in Canada West action.

Women's Rugby:

On Friday at Foote Field, the Pronghorns women's rugby team appeared to take firm control in the first half of the Suggitt Cup opener, racing ahead 26–5 with four strong tries. But Alberta's Pandas refused to let the match slip away. Energized by adjustments at halftime, the Pandas unleashed a stunning second-half rally—scoring 21 unanswered points, capped by a gritty injury-time try from third-year Katie Nadeau and a clutch conversion by Keira Skrenek to knot the game at 26–26. It was a tale of two halves, a wild finish, and a reminder that battles in this rivalry are never over until the final whistle

Men's Soccer:

Saturday afternoon brought a gritty 1–1 draw for the men's soccer team against the Alberta Golden Bears. After Alberta struck first in the 28th minute through Rodane Cato, Lethbridge rallied post-halftime—led by a crucial save by goalkeeper Tegan Romaine and capped by substitute Leo Kadezabek's equalizer in the 61st minute. Despite being outshot 11–4, the Horns' defensive resilience earned them a valuable road point.

Sunday, though, sparked real momentum. At Clarke Stadium against MacEwan, the Pronghorns earned their first win of the season, a 3–1 result. Kai Sakaguchi struck early, Will Hughes helped engineer the go-ahead, and Ziad El Hasumi iced it with a stoppage-time counter finished with style. Lethbridge's backline stood tall, completing the weekend with a record of 1-1-2.

Women's Soccer:

On the pitch in Saskatoon, the women's soccer squad showed heart but faced adversity under Saskatchewan's relentless pressure. Saturday's 3–1 result briefly looked promising after a first-half equalizer by rookie defender Lisa Popp, but Cassidy Vieira's late braces decided the match. Sunday was tougher yet—Lethbridge fell 10–0, the result of sustained Huskies dominance. Despite the lopsided score, the Horns continued to battle, with their goalkeepers combining for seven saves and flashes of transition play offering hope for the road ahead.
