Lethbridge- Sarah Benson’s second half marker spoiled the Lethbridge Pronghorns’ 2011 Canada West home opener and lifted the Calgary Dinos to a weekend sweep of the home-and-home with a 2-1 victory.

The Dinos struck early, only two minutes into the game, Tessa Miller’s curler slid just past the outstretched hands of ‘Horns keeper Taura Willoughby and into the low left corner.

Lethbridge had the next two quality chances, with Stephanie Groten just bending a shot wide right and Shannon Clark missing wide left from deep in the Dinos zone.

Clark was rewarded before the half was over, collecting a loose ball in the penalty area and after a quick turn placed the ball off the left post and in.

After the restart neither team was able to establish must of an attack, drastically affected by the blustery westerly wind, but the Dinos were able to take advantage of a scramble in the ‘Horns box. Benson collected a ball that squirted out of a pile and made no mistake.

From just outside the penalty area with only fifteen minutes remaining, the ‘Horns had a glorious chance to re-tie the score but the attempt sailed just wide.

With the win the Dinos improve to 3-1 while the ‘Horns are still searching for their first points of the season and sit 0-4.

The Horns will be back in action next weekend, hosting the Victoria Vikes and Fraser Valley Cascades, while the Dinos face the same two schools, starting with Fraser Valley on Saturday.
