Lethbridge – The University of Victoria scored early and twice late enroute to a 3-0 shutout of the Lethbridge Pronghorns, Saturday afternoon in Canada West soccer action.
The Vikes scored in the third minute and then again in the 81st and 88th minutes to seal the Vikes second win of the season and improve to 2-2-1. With the loss the Horns remains in search of their first points of the season and fall to 0-5-0.
Right out the gate, the Vikes put the pressure on the Horns and were rewarded immediately. Bobby Eng crossed the ball into the Horns six-yard box to the head of Jordie Oberg, who placed the header perfectly into the bottom corner.
While the Vikes dictated much of the play in the opening half, the Horns were not with out chances of their own, but had a hard time finding the mark. Shlomo Swan-Azman’s long range strike just sailed wide and Dario Pasquotti, after busting through a Vikes defender got a shot off in the penalty area but could not find the mark.
Off the restart, the Horns turned the tables on the Vikes, getting the better of the opportunities early but continued their struggles with finding the net. After narrowly missing a corner, a goal mouth scramble ensued but Justin Marin slid his shot past the post.
Horns keeper Colin Pattison made two spectacular saves diving to his right to keep the Horns in striking distance until late.
Andrew Ravenhill was left unmarked in the 81st minute and he placed a shot nicely into the far corner to put the Vikes up 2-0. Ravehill struck again in similar fashion with only two minutes remaining.
The Horns will look to hit the win column tomorrow afternoon, hosting the Fraser Valley Cascades; kick-off is set for 2:00pm at the University of Lethbridge Community Stadium. The Vikes will travel to Calgary to face the Dinos in the finale of their Alberta weekend swing.
