Lethbridge – The University of Victoria Vikes scored once in each half to down the Lethbridge Pronghorns 2-0 in Canada West soccer action. With the win the Vikes improve to 2-2-1, while the Horns remain winless, falling to 0-5.
For the majority of the opening half, both teams were stuck in a defensive stalemate but that was not due to a lack of chances.Horns newcomer Kyllo LeMoal had the first quality chance, 10 minutes in, on a partial break but her strike slid wide of the far post.
Not to be out done, Jaclyn Sawicki had a clear shot from inside the Horns penalty area but her shot would find the woodwork. Horns Striker Shannon Clark also had a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock but her shot from in close sailed over the crossbar.
With time winding down in the opening half, Horns goalkeeper Taura Willoughby collided with a defender, knocking the ball out of her hands. Maryse Reichgeld pounced on the loose ball and made no mistake, sending the Vikes to 1-0 lead at the half.
In the 65th minute, after a quality long ball down the sideline, Reichgeld found Sawicki alone on the far post to put the Vikes up 2-0.
Jaclyn Groten had the last quality chance for the Horns to spoil a shutout for the Vikes but her shot form a free kick curled wide of the post. Stepahnie Parker earned the clean sheet for the Vikes making one save, while her counterpart, Taura Willoughby made five saves in a losing cause.
The Horns will host the Fraser Valley Cascades tomorrow afternoon to complete the weekend, while the Vikes will travel to Calgary to face the Dinos.
Kick-off on the natural turf field at the University of Lethbridge Community Stadium is set for 12:00pm.
