Lethbridge – After struggling offensively as the season neared the midway point, the Lethbridge Pronghorns exploded with three goals enroute to earning their first win of the season, 3-0 over the Fraser Valley Cascades.

Prior to Sunday’s game the ‘Horns had only scored once in their previous five games.

With the win the ‘Horns improve to 1-5-0, while the Cascades fall to an identical 1-5-0 record.

Only 11 minutes into the contest, ‘Horns newcomer Shlomo Swan-Azman recorded his first CIS marker, off a goal mouth scramble.

The ‘Horns continued to dictate the play early, Dario Pasquotti narrowly missing from in close and Morgan Brownjohn just missing the net from a 30-yard strike.

From there on the Cascades settled down and the game went back and forth for the remainder of the half with no real threat of scoring as both team played well defensively, until the 41st minute.

In the 41st minute, off a Brownjohn low driving free kick, Cascades keeper Mark Village misplayed the shot, spilling the rebound to the feet of Horns Scott Slomp. Slomp made no mistake with the yawning cage to put the Horns up 2-0 at the half.

The second half continued with back and forth ball possession with the play played in the middle two-thirds of the field for the first 15 minutes.

On a play the Horns have attempted many times, senior back Justin Lariviere’s long throw found the head of Brownjohn on the back past, which he headed into the left corner to put the Horns up three.

After the goal, the Horns dropped back defensively, stifling any chance that Fraser Valley could muster.

The last quality chance of spoiling Pattison’s first shutout of the season game on a 84th minute Fraser Valley free kick. Sasa Plavsic’s drive from 22 yards forced Pattison to dive to his left and make a difficult save. Pattison finished the game with 8 saves.

The Horns head out on the road next weekend, traveling to the West Coast to face the UBC Thunderbirds and Trinity Western Spartans. The Cascades will return home to host Victoria next Saturday in the front half of a home-and-home series with the Vikes.
