An early power play opportunity saw Captain Beattie take advantage of a loose rebound and bury the puck glove side past a down and out Chapman midway through the first.
The Pronghorns held onto their one goal lead heading into the first intermission, with shots on goal favoring the Pandas 7-5.
The second period saw both teams struggle offensively. Despite a couple of good chances by both teams, including a hard blast by Sadie Lenstra that hit the post and deflected wide, neither club would manage to find the back of the net.
The equalizing goal came late in the third period as Campbell unloaded a rocket from inside the circle, just out the reach of Patterson’s glove, tying the game at ones.
In a situation all too familiar for the Pandas, this game needed extra time to declare a winner. Despite a late power play opportunity for the hometown ‘Horns, the overtime period wouldn’t be enough and so, for the second night in a row, they headed to a shootout. Tonight, unlike last night, would see the Pandas claim the elusive extra point as Sarah Hilworth and Karla Bourke both out-waited Patterson and skillfully buried their shots. Neither of the ‘Horns shooters were able to beat Chapman in the shootout.
After a three point weekend, the Pronghorns remain in a tightly squeezed fourth position in the Canada West division, while the Pandas climb to second following tonight’s game.
The Pronghorns (11-7-2) travel to Winnipeg next weekend to face off against the University of Manitoba Bisons (10-5-3) at Max Bell Arena. The Pandas (10-3-7) return home to Edmonton and play host the UBC Thunderbirds (1-14-2) at Clare Drake Arena. Both games are scheduled for 7pm local time.
