Lethbridge – Coming off a tough opening weekend versus the CIS number one ranked and defending CIS Champion Calgary Dinos, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s hockey team (0-2-0 CW) heads out on the road to face the Regina Cougars (1-1-0 CW).
In the conference opening weekend, the ‘Horns were beat in both games of a home-and-home series with the Dinos, but it was not all negative for the ‘Horns. After falling in Calgary 4-1, the ‘Horns outshot the Dinos 39-30 in Saturday’s 5-2 loss but could not find a solution for last year’s CIS tournament MVP, Dino goaltender Amanda Tapp.
Captain Ashley Beattie led the way for the ‘Horns offensively in the opening weekend with a goal and an assist but the ‘Horns will need the trio of Jenna-Marie Durnin, Kirsten Reeves and Sadie Lenstra to lead the ‘Horns offensively if they are going to be successful this season.
Lenstra, the reigning Canada West rookie of the year, was held scoreless last weekend, while Reeves scored once and Durnin registered an assist.
Regina returns most of a roster which saw the Cougars finish sixth and out of the playoffs in 2011-12.
Leading the returning players is a trio of fifth-year forwards that has carried a large portion of the offence over the past few years as Gina Campbell, Paige Wheeler and Rianne Wight all enter their final season of CIS eligibility. Wheeler led the team with 11 goals last year, while both she and Wight tied for the team lead with 17 points.
The Cougars opened the season last weekend with a series split in Vancouver versus the UBC Thunderbirds. The T-Birds shutout the Cougars the opening night, before Regina rebounded with a 3-2 shootout win the next night.
Face-off in Regina is set for both Friday and Saturday night at 7:00pm at the Co-Operators Centre. Live stats for the series can be found at:
