Post-Season Hopes on the Line in Winnipeg

10/10/2012 2:49:00 PM

Lethbridge – For the second straight week, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s soccer team (1-6-1 CW) heads out on the road to face a pair of schools in Winnipeg.

Friday night, the ‘Horns will face the University of Manitoba Bisons (2-6-0 CW) and wrap up the Manitoba swing versus first year Canada West team, Winnipeg Wesmen (0-7-1 CW) on Saturday. Kick-offs are scheduled for 5:00pm and 6:00pm respectively.

With only four games remaining, the ‘Horns playoff hopes are on life support, trailing the Calgary Dinos by five points for the eighth and final playoff spot in Canada West. On the women’s side, the top eight in the conference qualify for the post-season.

Despite dominating the UNBC Timberwolves statistically last weekend in Prince George last weekend, the ‘Horns only came away with a 2-2 tie and lost ground to Calgary, after the Dinos beat UNBC the day before.

Friday’s opponent, Manitoba Bisons has lost six games in a row and has only scored one goal during that stretch. The Bisons opened with two consecutive wins before the current streak, including a 1-0 win over the Wesmen. The Bisons also beat the Timberwolves 11-0 in the second game of the season.

A look at the Wesmen indicates common struggles for a first year program, winless through their first 8 games. The one tie came versus the Timberwolves and have been on the wrong end of blowout losses. Last weekend the Wesmen had a tough trip to the West Coast, losing 11-0 to the Victoria Vikes and 3-0 to the Fraser Valley Cascades.

The ‘Horns return home next weekend for their final conference games of the season, hosting the Regina Cougars and Saskatchewan Huskies.
