With just over two minutes left in the extra session and the Cougars on a power play thanks to a Lethbridge hooking infraction, Larson wired a point shot to the top shelf to score the lone goal of the contest. Kylie Gavelin and Paige Wheeler drew the assists on Larson’s goal, which beat Pronghorns goalie Crystal Patterson to the blocker side.
Both goalies were stellar during the game, as Ross stopped 26 shots to secure the shutout and Patterson made 28 saves for the Pronghorns.
“Overall, I thought it was a good win for us,” Cougars head coach Sarah Hodges said. “We battled hard all game long and we were solid up and down the lineup.”
The Cougars had to kill off a penalty themselves in overtime, as Kaitlin Sherven was given two minutes for a hit to the head. Lethbridge’s Jenna-Marie Durnin was given the hooking penalty which led to Larson’s goal just 20 seconds after the U of R successfully killed off Sherven’s minor.
The Cougars ended up 1-for-5 on the power play, while Lethbridge was 0-for-4 with the man advantage and sees its Canada West record drop to 0-2-1 on the season.
The victory improves Regina’s conference record to 2-1-0.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
