Winnipeg - History was made on this day. The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women's Soccer team recorded their first ever CIS regular season victory with a 1-0 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday afternoon at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg improves their overall conference record to 1-8-1, Lethbridge sits with an identical record in the Canada West Conference standings.
Kelsie Paul scored the only goal of the contest in the 53rd minute of the contest. Paul, had several earlier chances but was finally able to put a shot past Pronghorns goalkeeper Taura Willoughby for her first goal of the season.
Wesmen goalkeeper Janelle Deniset made 11 saves for the shutout. Deniset made several saves from close range to keep Lethbridge off the scoreboard. Willoughby made 10 saves for the Pronghorns.
Winnipeg had the field position tilted their way in the opening half keeping the play in Lethbridges side of the field for a good portion of the opening 45 minutes. The Wesmen registered nine of their 11 shots in the opening half.
The Wesmen played their final regular season home match and will venture out on the road to Alberta next weekend to face the Pandas on Saturday followed by a match against Mount Royal on Sunday in Calgary. Lethbridge will be at home against Regina and Saskatchewan.
