Lethbridge – Coming off a disappointing road trip last weekend, the Lethbridge Pronghorn men’s soccer team (3-4-4 CW) are now on the outside of the playoff picture looking in with only four games remaining.
Last weekend the ‘Horns had their consecutive games with a point streak snapped and lost both games in Calgary to the Mount Royal Cougars, dropping out of the final playoff spot in the Prairie Division.
Heading into last weekend, the ‘Horns were on a program best streak with points in seven consecutive games, but had that streak snapped Saturday in a controversial loss 3-2 to the Cougars. Sunday, despite directing 11 shots on goal, the ‘Horns could not beat the Cougar keeper and lost 1-0.
While the ‘Horns still control their own destiny the task will not be easy as they host the CIS third ranked Alberta Golden Bears (7-1-3 CW) this weekend in their final home games, before traveling to Saskatoon next weekend to face the Saskatchewan Huskies.
The ‘Horns trail the Huskies and Calgary Dinos by four points in the division and with the Cougars tied with the ‘Horns, there are four teams battling for the final two playoff spots.
The Golden Bears have secured a post-season spot and are now attempting to nail down top spot in the Division. By finishing first in the Division, the Bears would host the Canada West tournament and get a bye into the semi-finals. In their last action, the Bears tied the CIS second ranked UBC Thunderbirds 2-2 before downing the 8
th ranked TWU Spartans 2-1 the next day in Edmonton.
Kick-off for both Saturday and Sunday’s games are scheduled to follow the women’s game at 2:00pm. . Sunday will also mark the final home games for three Pronghorns, as Brett Silbernagel, Luc Rajcic and Matt Medoruma will all complete their eligibility this year.
