Starting in net for the Pronghorns was Crystal Patterson, who turned aside 27 of 28 shots she faced. In net for the Thunderbirds was former Women’s Canadian National Team goalie, Danielle Dube, who stopped all 22 shots she faced to earn the shutout.
The T-Birds came out strong in the first, earning the majority of the scoring chances early, while Lethbridge struggled to keep the puck out of their end.
Rafter scored first for the visiting team, as her wrister from the slot found its way through traffic and into the net, past Patterson.
Outshot 14-6 by the visiting team, Lethbridge headed into the break with hopes of shifting the momentum heading into the second frame.
The second period began in much the same way as the first. Both teams hustled hard and earned a couple close chances at each end but the ‘Horns really came to life on the power play; finding shots from all angles, hemming the T-Birds in for the entire two minutes but would ultimately fail to convert.
Despite great chances by Sadie Lenstra and Amy Van Buskirk, Lethbridge wouldn’t manage to add the tying goal in the third.
With the win the T-Birds improve to 2-1-2, while the ‘Horns who have been shutout twice in their last three games, fall to 1-3-1.
Game two of the weekend series goes tomorrow night at 6:00pm at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
