Lethbridge – Sitting four points out of a playoff spot heading into the weekend, the Lethbridge Pronghorns upset the CIS fourth ranked and Prairie Division leading Alberta Golden Bears, 2-0 in game one of the two game weekend set.

Dominique Point du Jour scored in the first half and Captain Morgan Brownjohn salted the game away late in the second half.

With the win the ‘Horns move back to .500 at 4-4-2 but more importantly move within one point of the Saskatchewan Huskies for third in the Division after the Huskies were beaten by the Calgary Dinos 1-0.  With the loss the Golden Bears suffer only their second defeat of the season and fall to 7-2-3.  They’re only one point ahead of the hard charging Dinos for first in the division and host of the Canada West Championships.

With the wind gusting to more than 70 kilometers an hour at times, a premium was on short calculated attacks and staying disciplined with the defensive structure. Both teams were solid early in their defensive game, yielding very few quality chances in the opening half.

Nathan Marks and Point du Jour worked a nice give-and-go but a Bear’s defender made it back to break up the chance.

The Bear’s best chance came off a ‘Horns defending miscue. A ‘Horns defender attempted to head the ball back to ‘Horns keeper Tyler Boast but the Bear’s David Mensah- Agyeman tracked the ball down.  A strong challenge from Boast kept the ball out of the net.

With the half winding down, Brownjohn’s corner was flicked on by Marks, right to Point du Jour, who headed the ball home to put the ‘Horns up 1-0.

Holding the lead entering the second half, Marks, who finished the game with two assists, was dangerous again only moments in. Breaking free from his check, Marks got a clear shot from inside the box but a sliding challenge from Bear’s keeper Jay Vetsch kept the ‘Horns lead to only one.

After stymieing the Bear’s attack for much of the half, substitute Glynndon Dobson had a dangerous chance in close but Boast was able to deflect the ball over the bar.

Storming back up the field, Brownjohn found himself on the end of slick three-way passing play with Marks and Matt Medoruma. Brownjohn made no mistake from the top of the box blasting home his team leading third of the season in the 87th minute.

Boast earned his fifth clean sheet of the season making 10 saves, while his counterpart Vetsch made eight saves in the loss.

The ‘Horns and Bears will complete the weekend set tomorrow afternoon, kick-off is scheduled to follow the women’s game at 2:00pm.
