Box Score Saskatoon - On the final day of the Canada West men’s soccer regular season, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and Lethbridge Pronghorns played to a 1-1 draw on a cold, windy day in Saskatoon’s Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park.
After a scoreless first half, both teams were able to tally in the second 45 minutes of play. Lethbridge scored in the 57
th minute, while Saskatchewan potted a goal in the 65
th.
Saskatchewan will finish the regular season 6-5-4. TheHuskies will now travel to Edmonton for the Canada West Championship tournament hosted by the Alberta Golden Bears next weekend.
Lethbridge will end their season at 4-5-6. The four wins ties the program recorded that was set during the 1986 season when the conference only played a 10-game schedule. The 18 points the ‘Horns have earned this season is a program’s best.
The Pronghorns opened the scoring in the 57
th minute on a free kick. Brownjohn sent the ball into the slew of players waiting in front of the Huskies’ net. Matt Medoruma was able to slide the ball past an outstretched Saskatchewan keeper Michal Bandula.
Saskatchewan’s Brandon Holmes tied the match on a strike from just outside the 18-yard line on a feed from Wilson Ntigne in the 65
th minute.
Bandula made five stops in the match for the Huskies, while Tyler Boast made four saves at the other end of the pitch for the Pronghorns.
Canada West quarter-final matches begin Thursday in Edmonton. The Huskies will face the Victoria Vikes. The winners of the two quarter-finals will meet one of the season divisional leaders either the Alberta Golden Bears or UBC Thunderbirds in the semifinals Friday. The Canada West champion will be decided Sunday.
