Lethbridge – Coming off their best weekend of the season, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s hockey team (3-3-2 CW) looks to keep the roll going, hosting the Manitoba Bisons (2-5-1 CW) for a pair of games, Saturday and Sunday night.

While the ‘Horns still rank in the bottom half of the conference offensively, their scoring has shown some life of late. Last weekend the ‘Horns earned three of four points in a match up with the Alberta Pandas in Edmonton, who had been previously undefeated and more importantly had only surrendered seven goals in the first six games.

The Horns scored six times in the two games, including twice on the power play and ended the Pandas seven game winning streak with a 2-1 win Saturday night. Prior to last weekend, the ‘Horns had only scored two power play goals in the first six games, but went two for three last Friday night and to move out of the basement in power play percentage.

Third-year forward Megan Bailey has had a breakout season thus far, setting a new career best in points with seven in only eight games and is now tied for the team’s scoring lead with Kirsten Reeves. Reeves is tied for the conference lead in goals with six.

Only two years removed from their second Canada West Championship in three years, the Manitoba Bisons are off to a rocky start this season and enter the weekend losers of their last three games.

Last weekend, the Bisons were swept by the top ranked Calgary Dinos, 4-1 and 5-1. The Bisons were also swept the Pandas during the opening weekend of the season but have win versus Mount Royal and Saskatchewan.

Through eight games, the Bisons have equally struggled scoring goals and are tied with the ‘Horns with 16 goals for. Defensively the Bisons have allowed the second most goals in the conference with 26.

Meagan Vestby leads the way offensively for the Bisons  with four goals and four  assists while, Maggie Litchfield-Medd is right behind her with seven points in eight games.

Third-year goaltender Leiette Klassen has carried the bulk of the load for the Bisions between the pipes starting seven of the team’s eight games, but has been pulled twice in favour of sophomore Dee-Ann Marion.
