'Horns Fall to the Defending Champs in Opener

Box Score CALGARY – A trio of goals just 1:21 apart in the second period was the difference as the University of Calgary Dinos opened the 2012-13 Canada West season with a 4-1 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

Calaine Inglis, Elana Lovell, and Erika Mitschke scored in quick succession just over 13 minutes into the middle frame as Calgary broke open a 1-1 tie to cruise to their 19th straight win in conference and playoff competition, dating back to the middle of last year.

Despite the victory, however, Dinos head coach Danielle Goyette saw plenty of room for improvement.

“I feel like there was some nervousness with the players, and we started with everyone trying to do it all by themselves,” said Goyette, who enters her sixth season as head coach of the Dinos. “We used our speed and moved the puck in the second, but we got back to the bad habits at the end of the game. We saw what we can do in those two minutes in the second period when we did move the puck, but overall we need to pay more attention to the details.”

Captain Tanya Morgan opened the scoring for the Dinos in the first on a 5-on-3 power play, when a shot from Stephanie Ramsay on the point was deflected in front by the fifth-year forward past Lethbridge netminder Shauntelle Parsons.

The Horns nearly tied it up late in the first on a freak play where a Calgary clearing attempt deflected off Lethbridge skater Breanna Frasca’s head just in front of the goal, forcing Dinos goalie Amanda Tapp to make a reaction save. Lethbridge would tie it up just over five minutes into the second, however, on a goal by Megan Bailey in tight.

Calgary took over from there. Iya Gavrilova fed a nifty pass to Calaine Inglis on right wing in the neutral zone, and Inglis went to work against the Lethbridge defence along the boards. She cut toward the net and fired a backhand that eluded Parsons for the eventual game-winner.

Just 1:11 later, Lovell hopped on a rebound with the Dinos enjoying a power play to give Calgary a 3-1 lead. And 10 seconds after that, Mitschke skated in on left wing and buried a shot glove side on Parsons to complete the trifecta.

Mitschke’s goal chased Parsons from the game, and Crystal Patterson stemmed the tied from there, stopping all 16 shots she faced the rest of the way. But it wasn’t enough, and Calgary skated away with the 4-1 win.

In the Dinos’ goal, Tapp stopped 19 of the 20 shots fired her way by the Pronghorns. Lethbridge went 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Dinos converted on two of their seven chances.

The Dinos (1-0-0) and Pronghorns (0-1-0) head south to do it all over again Saturday night in the rematch in Lethbridge. Puck drops at 7 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena, live on CanadaWest.tv.

NOTES: Prior to the game, the Dinos raised their 2012 CIS championship banner to the rafters at Father David Bauer Arena … the game start was delayed more than 45 minutes due to the late arrival of officials … Calgary played without forward Hayley Wickenheiser, who is recovering from an injury sustained in an exhibition game last week …
