Box score
Calgary opened the scoring off a seeing-eye shot from the point that deflected off a couple bodies and past starting goaltender Crystal Patterson. After the dust settled, Zvonkovic was credited with her first of the young season.
Before the period was out, the Dinos doubled their lead while on the power play. Mitschke collected a juicy rebound and chipped the shot off the crossbar and in.
Despite holding a 16-9 shots on goal advantage in the opening frame, the ‘Horns were not able to solve Amanda Tapp.
The Dinos flipped the script on the ‘Horns in the second period, outshooting the ‘Horns 20-5 but it would be the ‘Horns that got themselves back into the game early in the period. Captain Ashley Beattie’s shot from the point eluded a screened Tapp, cutting the Dino lead to one.
Just past the midway point of the period the Dinos re-established the two goal edge, working a give-and-go out of the corner. Inglis found her on the end of the passing play with Heather Berzins and walked out of the corner and beat Patterson under the arm.
Late in the second, the Dinos had a great opportunity to extend their lead with an extended five-on-three power play but were not able to capitalize.
After applying pressure from the start of the third period, the ‘Horns were finally rewarded at the 12:56 mark with Reeves corralling a loose puck after a point shot was knocked down and beat Tapp short side, cutting the Dino lead to 3-2.
Any hopes of a ‘Horns comeback was short lived with the ‘Dinos regaining the two goal cushion less than two minutes later. Berzins went in alone and deked Patterson to the glove side. With more than three minutes remaining the ‘Horns pulled Patterson for the extra attacker but the Dinos hemmed the ‘Horns in their own end and Smith pounced on a turnover and put the game away.
The ‘Horns outshot the Dinos 18-7 in the period but Tapp put the caps on a solid night, making 37 saves, while Patterson turned aside 31 shots in the loss.
After the loss the ‘Horns fall to 0-2-0 on the season and head out on the road next weekend traveling to Regina to face
the Regina Cougars. The Dinos improve to 2-0-0 and also head out the road, traveling to UBC to face the Thunderbirds.
