Lethbridge – As the 2012-13 Canada West season nears the mid-point, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s hockey team (4-5-3 CW) are still searching for consistency in their play and host the surging Saskatchewan Huskies (3-6-3 CW), in the next to last weekend before the semester break.
For the ‘Horns it has been a roller coaster first semester with up and downs in each weekend series. The first semester of win one-lose one weekends has been bookended by a weekend sweeps by both Calgary based schools.
The lowest scoring team in the conference, the ‘Horns need to find some secondary scoring if they are going to gain any momentum before the semester break. Kirsten Reeves and Megan Bailey lead the team with eight points apiece with Reeves tied for second in the conference in goals with seven.
A noticeable absence in the ‘Horns offense this season had been 2011-12 Canada West rookie of the year, Sadie Lenstra, who has been out of the line up since the fifth game of the season due to injury and this is where the ‘Horns need other players to step up and contribute at the offensive end.
After getting off to a less than ideal start to the 2012-13 campaign, the Huskies enter the weekend with a renewed sense of confidence after taking three of four points from the defending CIS Champion Calgary Dinos last weekend in Saskatoon. The Huskies upset the CIS second ranked Dinos 2-1 before falling 4-3 in overtime last Saturday night.
Offensively, the Huskies are led by a trio of forwards that have accounted for the bulk of the team’s scoring. Danny Stone and Cara Wooster have been in on more than half of the Huskies 29 goals and have 15 points apiece to sit tied for second in the conference in scoring. Wooster’s twin sister Cami sits third on the team in scoring with 10 points.
In the crease, the Huskies have relied heavily on freshmen Cassidy Hendricks, who has played in nine of the Huskies 12 games. She has accumulated a 2.63 goals-against-average and stellar 0.915 save percentage.
Puck drops both Friday and Saturday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena at 7:00pm, the games will also be webcast on
