CALGARY – The beat-up, run-down University of Calgary Dinos put forward a 60-minute shift of hard work and emerged with a 2-0 shutout win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday night, wrapping up the 2012 portion of their conference schedule.

The win wrapped up a weekend sweep for the Dinos, who defeated the Horns 3-1 at Nicholas Sheran Arena in Lethbridge Friday night.

Calaine Inglis scored the game-winner for the Dinos in the first period and Hayley Wickenheiser potted the empty-netter as the Dinos improved to 13-2-1 on the season, maintaining their three-point lead atop the standings over red-hot Regina. With the loss, Lethbridge falls to 5-8-3, tied for last place in the conference with Manitoba at the break.

It was a frustrating night at times for the Dinos, who peppered the Lethbridge goal with 30 shots but could only beat Crystal Patterson once before Wickenheiser iced it into the empty net. No. 2-ranked Calgary held the territorial advantage for much of the game but was unable to capitalize on that, particularly with a couple of Wickenheiser-led two-on-one chances in the second period and a lengthy five-on-three power play.

“We’ve been training hard, and you could see we were working hard but not always smart,” said Dinos head coach Danielle Goyette. “We know that we’re going to be better in the second part of the season, and that’s what we want to do. Tonight, credit to the players – they were dead, but they dug down and got it done. We got the two points, and  we’re headed into the second half of the season in first place.”

Inglis scored the opener early, hopping on a rebound from a Wickenheiser shot at 5:17 of the first period to give the Dinos the 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way until Inglis and Wickenheiser again combined for a tally at 19:45 of the third, this time in reverse order as Inglis battled through a pair of defenders and fired a weak behind-the-back shot toward the open cage. Wickenheiser picked up her fifth point of the weekend by poking into the empty net, capping off a weekend where she figured in each of the Dinos’ five goals.

Backup netminder Jennifer Mallard made 18 saves for the shutout for Calgary. Neither team was successful on the power play, with Calgary going 0-for-4 while Lethbridge went 0-for-2.

The two teams join the rest of the conference for the December exam and holiday break, returning to the ice in 2013. Lethbridge will play host to second-place Regina Jan. 4-5, while the Dinos will welcome the UBC Thunderbirds to Father David Bauer Arena for a two-game set that same weekend.
