Box Score Lethbridge – After opening the season with two tough losses on the road, the Lethbridge Pronghorns rebounded with a closely contested 1-0 win over the newest member of the conference Mount Royal Cougars. New comer Erin Greeves scored her first CIS goal in the opening minute of the second half and that is all the ‘Horns would need.
With the win the ‘Horns improve to 1-2-0, while Mount Royal is steal searching for their first Canada West win and fall to 0-3-0.
For the opening 45 minutes much of the game was contested in the middle of the field with both defenses thwarting any attacking chances. The stats a mirror image of the play were almost even with the ‘Horns holding a slight 4-3 advantage on shots that found the target.
The best opportunities in the opening half both came off the ‘Horns boots with Dani Lagemaat hitting the crossbar on a long range attempt and Kim Shellenberg testing Cougars keeper in the 34
th minute with another shot from well out but Cougars' goalie Kelsey Marklund scrambled across the crease to make the save.
At the other end, the Cougars most dangerous chance came late in the half with a beautiful cross from Dankia Cook to the back post but there was not a Cougar at the other end to finish.
Under a minute after the restart, Greeves gave the ‘Horns the lead. Half-time substitute Kendall McCowan placed a perfect cross in the box and Greeves made no mistake heading it into the top left corner.
Following the ‘Horns first goal of the season, the game returned to a defensive battle, with neither team sustaining any extended pressure.
Searching for the equalizer, the Cougars pressed forward in the last 15 minutes and did have two glorious chances to tie the score. Ashleigh Wroe had the most dangerous of the chances, breaking in on a partial breakaway only to have Willoughby come sliding out to take the ball off her foot.
With only one minute remaining, Jenna Redlich also broke away from the pack and eluded Willoughby’s challenge but could not maintain control and the ball rolled out of bounds.
Willoughby earned the clean sheet making 10 saves, while Marklund made six saves before being substituted late. Janelle Chicilo made one save in the final 17 minutes in relief.
The ‘Horns will host the Alberta Pandas tomorrow afternoon to wind up the weekend, kick-off is set for 12:00pm. The Cougars will face the Calgary Dinos at the University of Calgary.
