CALGARY – In their home opener, the University of Calgary Dinos were knocked off for the second straight day by the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 2-0 at West Varsity Soccer Pitch on Sunday.
The loss drops Calgary to 0-3-1 on the campaign, while Lethbridge improves to 2-2-0.
The 2012 season began for the Dinos with a loss and draw last weekend against the University of British Columbia and Trinity Western by the scores of 3-0 and 1-1 respectively.
Saturdauy, in the first leg of this home-and-home set against Lethbridge, Calgary was unable to find the back of the net at they were defeated 1-0.
“It was pretty disappointing on our end, if you look at our statistics we have scored one goal in four games and it’s not good enough,” said head coach Brain McDonnell. “Lethbridge shut us out in back-to-back games and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what the problem is. I think yesterday’s game came down to the penalty kick that received; today, Lethbridge was the better side."
The Dinos had to hold off some aggressive play by the Pronghorns in the early stages before they were able to turn the tides later in the half. The best chance of the first half came from Kieran Lane-Oppenheim as his diving header just sailed high of the Lethbridge net.
The majority of the first half saw the two teams struggle to gain on an edge on the other with numerous fouls being called as neither side could break the deadlock.
Lethbridge started the second half with a great opportunity to open the scoring. Midfielder Shlomo Swan-Azmon let a rocket go from the right side of the box to the top right corner. An alert Jordan Unreiner was in position though to jump up and block away the scoring chance to keep the game at zeros.
The strong Pronghorn attack eventually provided dividends as a quick shot from outside the box by Morgan Brownjohn beat the Dinos’ goalkeeper for the 1-0 advantage. The tally came on the 62nd minute.
In the 83rd minute, Lethbridge made it a 2-0 game. Lucas Rajcic let a perfect shot go from the left corner of the box, eluding the outstretched hand of Unreiner, off the crossbar and in to round out the scoring.
Both teams ended the match with 12 shots. Tyler Boast had five stops for Lethbridge, while Unreiner had six saves for Calgary.
Next weekend, the Dinos remain at home as they host the University of Victoria and the University of the Fraser Valley on Sept. 22-23. The Pronghorns return home where they also host UFV and Victoria next Saturday and Sunday.
