Lethbridge – Two second half goals by Donna Pinning and Paige Friesen lifted the Fraser Valley Cascades to a come from behind 2-1 win over the host Lethbridge Pronghorns in Saturday afternoon Canada West soccer action.
Kim Shellenberg responded for the Pronghorns.
With the win the Cascades improve to 3-1-0 on the season, while the ‘Horns fall to 1-4-0.
After a virtual stalemate for the opening 25 minutes of the game, college transfer Kim Shellenberg gave the ‘Horns the lead from a set piece. From 40-yards out, Shellenberg’s shot found the top right corner past the out stretched arms of Cascade keeper Chantelle Biagioni.
Following the ‘Horns goal, the game returned to a defensive battle, as the teams only combined for five shots in the opening half. The Cascades did come dangerously close to tying the match in first half injury time, as Sunayna Samra quickly turned in the ‘horns box but her shot sailed over the bar.
The second half definitely leaned in the favor of the Cascades, but the ‘Horns defense and goaltender held the visitors off the scoreboard until the 75
th minute, when a ‘Horns defender got tangled up with a Cascade attacker and a penalty was awarded. Pinning stepped up and picked the top left corner to tie the score.
Following a collision of a charging ‘Horns keeper Taura Willoughby and a Cascades Paige Friesen found herself in alone and gave the Cascades the lead depositing it into a empty net.
Willoughby finished the day with 9 saves and Biagioni earned the win, making 5 saves.
The ‘Horns host the Victoria Vikes tomorrow to wrap up the weekend, please note that game time will be at 10:00am. The Cascades will finish their Alberta swing tomorrow in Calgary versus the Dinos.
