'Horns Blanked by Vikes

Lethbridge – A potent Victoria Vikes continued their scoring ways and dispatched the Lethbridge Pronghorns 7-0 in Canada West soccer action.

Heading into today’s game, the Vikes had scored 18 goals through four games and had a balanced attack today with seven different goal scorers.
 
 Emma Greig recorded her eighth goal of the season, while Amy Lawrenece,  Cassie Dennis, Natalie Scharf, Sarah Douglas and Jana Yates also scored for the Vikes.
 
With the loss, the ‘Horns fall to 1-5-0 on the season and the Vikes improve to 4-0-1.
 
The opening half was controlled and dictated by the Victoria Vikes, generating 12 shots and 10 corner kicks, while the ‘Horns were only able to attempt two shots and did not get awarded a corner kick.
 
The powerful Victoria attack did not take long to open the scoring, off a corner kick less than two minutes into the game. Emma Greig collected a loose ball in the box and scored her eighth goal of the season.
 
Off another corner kick, Amy Lawrence corralled the ball after it was banged around the ‘Horns penalty area and picked the top left corner past the outstretched arms of ‘Horns keeper Taura Willoughby.
 
In the 31st minute from a free kick, Mallory Hackett’s attempt took a fortunate bounce off a ‘Horns defender and past Willoughby for an own goal and extended the Vikes lead to 3-0.
 
While the ‘Horns picked up the pace in the second half, the Vikes would strike again in 64th minute. Cassie Dennis gained a step on a ‘Horns defender and placed a perfect shot off the cross bar and in.
 
Scharf added to the lead in the 70th minute and Douglas pushed the score to 6-0, receiving a pass in box and placing a shot to the top right corner. Yates rounded out the scoring  in the 87th minute.
 
Sarah Parker played the first 45 minutes in goal for the Vikes and shared the shutout with Tanya Jones. The two keepers combined to make 2 saves. Willoughby made 10 saves for the ‘Horns in the loss.
 
The ‘Horns will play only one game next weekend, hosting the Calgary Dinos next Saturday afternoon. The Vikes will host the Winnipeg Wesmen and Manitoba Bisons next weekend.
