Box Score
Lethbridge- In the only game of the weekend for both the Lethbridge Pronghorns and Calgary Dinos, the Dinos struck twice in the opening eight minutes but it wasn't until extra time that the visitors would secure their first victory of the season, 3-2.
With the game in injury time, a collision between ‘Horns keeper Taura Willoughby, an attacking Dino and ‘Horns defender, gave just enough of an opening for Laura Deeks to score the game winning goal.
Nikki Furukawa, and an own goal by the ‘Horns accounted for the Dino other markers, while Erin Greeves and Emily Felker responded for the Dinos.
Furukawa opened the scoring in the sixth minute, collecting a rebound off a nice diving save from Willoughby and deposited the ball into the wide open goal. Furukawa had another impact on the game only two minutes later, when her cross was knocked into the ‘Horns net by a sliding defender.
It took the ‘Horns a few more minutes but they finally settled into the game and began to play with the Dinos. First-year Pronghorn Erin Greeves brought the ‘Horns within one in the 23rd minute. Greeves was the recipient of a wayward Dino clear and pick to the top right corner from just inside the Dino penalty area.
After the opening eight minutes the remainder of the game was dead even, evident by the nearly identical stats. The ‘Horns clawed back on the shot clock but it took until the 72nd minute for the ‘Horns to get the equalizer. Off a set piece just outside the Dino penalty area, a swinging cross into the far right of the box found Felker, who placed a shot in the low left corner.
Both teams had opportunities to break the deadlock before Deeks’ game winner but both team’s attempts sailed over the bar.
The Dinos held a slim 12-10 advantage in shot attempts, while Willoughby finished with five saves in the loss and her counterpart Kristen Barton earned her first win of the season with a four save performance.
With the win the Dinos improve to 1-3-3 and the ‘Horns fall to 1-6-0.
Both the ‘Horns and Dinos will head to Prince George next weekend for another one-game weekend. The Dinos face the Timberwolves Saturday and the ‘Horns will play UNBC on Sunday.
